Arrival in New Orleans

We left Gainesville about 8:20, ran into heavy rain before reaching Alachua and then had some intermittently all the way along I-10. The heaviest by far was coming into New Orleans about 4:30, right into the teeth of rush hour. Our first stop on the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives tour was in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The place is called "The Shed" and it is aptly named, frequent customers are referred to as "Shedheads". They have several dozen regional and national BBQ awards including the best pulled pork sandwich in America. It looks like something a group of drunk frat boys would put up in about a day or so. "Charmingly quaint" some might say, drunk frat boys with way too many beers and an unbelievable number of Christmas lights would be my description. Food was terrific, among the best dry rubbed pulled pork I have tasted. The sauce is excellent but has just a tad too much brown sugar or molasses for my taste. One of the sides was a baked potato salad, unusual and really good.

We are planning on a quiet evening, maybe go over to a joint called "Mothers" and have shrimp creole and then to the Cafe Dumonde for pastries and coffee.

I am going to try and upload pictures tomorrow. Til then we are your travelling trolls, Larry and Jeannie

  1. You probably remember that old Waylon Jennings line about "Don't go writin' hot checks down in Mississippi."

Here's another one for you--Don't try to drive through Houston,Texas, heading West any time around afternoon rush hour. The traffic is unbelievable and the sun is in your eyes and you can't see to read the road signs.

Hole-up some where and eat some more crawfish and go through Houston in the morning time. The best boiled crawfish in the world is in Lake Charles, LA.

Keep up the good work. I know you ain't gon' be good so be careful.
