There are places that are out of the way, you know off the beaten path..... and then there is Luckenbach. You go down a lane, turn off on a farm road, go to the Blue Moon Honky Tonk and take the loop.....can't miss it. Picture children of the sixties defending the Alamo. Woodstock meets the Beverly Hillbillies would be close. Beautiful site, doesn't sound like it, I mean with a dirt road, dirt parking lot, but big beautiful oak trees everywhere, wooden buildings with tin roofs, an outdoor stage and a dance hall. It all works, does not looked staged, the people living there give it authenticity. These folks are not on vacation, they have lived off the grid for a bit. Five buildings total, counting the post office, overall looked like a "Willie Nelson place". You know? Ragged and worn but still good to go. Jeannie took the pictures and pointed out a saddled Texas Longhorn, that's right, a saddled long horned steer. For two bucks you get your picture made astride the critter, Jeannie wanted me to have my picture made on him, I refused...the steer was grateful.
Billy Joe Shaver is still the same free spirit, decided not to play this week, will play next Friday...maybe. When asked why he changed the date, the owner said "Billy Joe ain't big on giving reasons." With that it is adios Luckenbach. Now it is time for Marty Robbins and a verse or so of "The West Texas Town of El Paso".
